Why Bioteen Created This Supplement (Understanding the Problem)

Protein is a hard- working nutrient.   It’s needed for the growth and repair of muscles and tissues, and the production of enzymes and hormones.  Proteins provide the building blocks, called amino acids and polypeptides, of all muscle tissue.  Protein is also your “brain food.” Because your brain is one big muscle, not getting enough protein can hurt brain function.

Protein needs are based on age, sex, body weight and stage of development, with teens needing between 10 to 30% of their daily calories from protein. Although an individual’s exact needs will vary, the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) provides a good reference for how much of a certain nutrient a healthy individual needs in a day. The RDA for protein is 46 grams for teenage girls and 52 grams for teenage boys per day.

The amount of protein Teens need depends on their height, weight, gender and level of activity. In general, teenage boys need about 52 grams of protein per day, while teenage girls need about 46 grams per day. More active teen athletes require more protein.   

In order for protein to do its job, teens have to eat enough food to meet their daily energy needs. When calories are too low, the body uses protein for energy, leaving less for its other roles.

What Is Whey Protein & Who Should Be Taking It

Native whey protein is produced by the filtration of unprocessed raw milk from grass-fed cows. This production method leaves proteins intact and gives native whey higher leucine content than the more common whey protein concentrate.  It is often referred to as the cleanest, least processed whey protein available.

The Science (How Whey Protein Works)

Proteins are made up of many building blocks, known as amino acids. Our body needs dietary protein to supply amino acids for the growth and maintenance of our cells and tissues. 

Our bodies are made up of thousands of different proteins, each with a specific function. They make up the structural components of our cells and tissues as well as many enzymes, hormones and the active proteins secreted from immune cells.

These body proteins are continually being repaired and replaced throughout our lives. This process (known as ‘protein synthesis’) requires a continuous supply of amino acids. Although some amino acids can be recycled from the breakdown of old body proteins, this process is imperfect. This means we must eat dietary protein to keep up with our body’s amino acid demand.

The whey protein used in Bioteen Whey Protein is extracted from milk as a raw material. This results in a protein product with higher purity and nutritional properties. Regular whey proteins, on the other hands, are extracted from liquid whey which is a colorized by-product of cheese manufacture. Prior to the protein extraction process this liquid raw material is typically bleached using chemicals to decolourize it. The problem with bleaching is that it damages the proteins which results in the loss of biological activity of important whey components (called microfractions). Bleaching also gives rise to residual chemicals like benzoates and lipid oxidation compounds which are potentially harmful.
