Why Bioteen Created This Supplement

The teenage years can be a physically and emotionally stressful time. The rapid physical development, surging hormones, sexual organ development and the expectations at school and sport can put a lot of stress on the body and use up a lot of energy and nutrients like vitamins and minerals.

This can leave teenagers at a higher risk to infections as stress can dysregulate immune responses to pathogens. Coming down with an infection can have a negative impact on schoolwork and extra-curricular activities.

What Is Immunergy™ & Who Should Be Taking It

Immunergy™ is a naturally-flavored ready-to-mix nutritional supplement formulated to support your immune system and boost your energy levels.

Immunergy™ provides nutrients that help maintain the body’s natural immune defence in top shape, improving its preparedness to fight infections.

Immunergy™ contains Wellmune®, a full spectrum multi-vitamin including vitamins B3, B6, B12, C and D, and a blend of minerals like Zinc, Selenium and Magnesium.

The various ingredients in Immunergy™ have been found in independent studies to:

  • Help maintain the integrity and function of body structures most exposed to challenges (e.g. gut, respiratory tract and skin).
  • Assist with general “first line defenses” (innate immunity) by helping in the proliferation and movement of various white blood cells.
  • Assist with more specific defences (acquired immunity) by helping in the proliferation of cells that produce antibodies and engulf pathogens.

Immunergy™ is free from artificial flavors, colors and is gluten, dairy, soy and GMO free.

The Science (How Immunergy™ Works)

Wellmune®, one of the key ingredients in Immunergy™, is a leading natural beta-glucan clinically proven to help strengthen your immune system. Beta-glucans are naturally found in foods such as baker’s yeast, shiitake mushrooms, and cereal grains, like barley, oats, rye, and wheat. Wellmune® is a yeast beta 1,3/1,6 glucan. Using a proprietary process, Wellmune® is extracted from the cell wall of a proprietary strain of baker’s yeast. Highly purified, Wellmune® is gluten-free.

Added to everyday foods, beverages and supplements, Wellmune® allows you to be well and stay well. Wellmune® is also:

  • Natural, safe and can be taken daily.
  • Derived from baker’s yeast, so it’s naturally gluten-free.
  • Non-allergenic.
  • Kosher, Halal, gluten-free, and available in Non-GMO Project Verified.
  • A patented and award-winning global brand.

Knowing how Wellmune® works, is the key to understating its ability to help strengthen the immune system. This unique immune-supporting ingredient triggers human immune defenses that have evolved over thousands of years to protect the body, but how exactly does Wellmune® work?

When taken daily, as a supplement or in a beverage like Immunergy™, this unique yeast beta glucan, clinical research shows that Wellmune® helps to support the innate immune system by priming it to be ready to react to a threat, rather than overstimulating it.

Think of your immune system primed by Wellmune® as your wellness team that has been trained daily to go into action during game day. When you take Wellmune® every day, immune cells are better prepared to go into action and help fight off foreign invaders.

  • When consumed, Wellmune® enters the gut.
  • Cells in the gut absorb Wellmune® and travel to immune organs throughout the body.
  • These cells break Wellmune® down into smaller pieces that attach themselves to immune cells.
  • Primed by Wellmune®, those immune cells move more effectively to recognize and kill foreign challenges.
  • By priming your immune cells to be ready for foreign challenges (virus, bacteria, etc.), Wellmune® can help strengthen immune function. While we know the primary way to do this is to maintain the healthy habits that keep your immune system running smoothly, experts also agree that sometimes extra functional ingredients, like Wellmune®, are beneficial to immune health.
  • There is also emerging evidence that Wellmune® can “train” the body’s immune cells to react more quickly when a pathogen is detected.

Wellmune® is taken up into the body through specialized immune tissue in the intestines. There, immune cells engulf Wellmune® and degrade it into smaller fragments that bind to neutrophils, the most abundant immune cells in the body. Primed by Wellmune®, neutrophils move more quickly to recognize and kill foreign challenges.

What is the difference of Wellmune® compared to other immune health ingredients?

Wellmune® is natural, safe and can be taken daily. Wellmune® is unique because it has been well-studied and supported by over a dozen clinical studies that show Wellmune® can help:

  • Improve general immune health.
  • Maintain overall physical health.
  • Protect against the harmful effects of stress.
  • Promote healthy energy levels and mental clarity

Glutamine is the most prevalent amino acid in the body and has an established role in immune function at gut and systemic (whole body) levels as illustrated in the diagram below:

A. Glutamine assists in maintaining the development and function of intestinal cells.

The intestine utilizes about 30% of total glutamine, indicating that it is a key nutrient for the intestine. Studies in healthy humans have shown that three quarters of ingested glutamine is absorbed into the digestive tract tissues, and most of the absorbed glutamine is metabolized within the intestine. The consistent consumption of low-quality, high carbohydrate processed foods low in fiber, can stress and potentially harm the gut. Considering that the intestines depend on glutamine more than other organs, stress on the gut will require much of the glutamine circulating in the body. Glutamine is recruited to maintain gut integrity, however once glutamine stores are depleted, the intestinal lining is left even more vulnerable to cumulative damage

Glutamine is involved in the replication and development of intestinal stem cells into intestinal cells and goblet cells. The latter are cells that produce mucus which is itself an important immune barrier at the intestinal level.

B. Glutamine helps maintain the structural integrity of intestinal cells for physical defence

Glutamine maintains healthy tight junctions at the intestinal cells. The latter are intercellular connections in the gastrointestinal walls that determine what compounds are absorbed as well as physically blocking the entry of invading pathogens into the bloodstream. Disruption of tight junction functionality results in increased gut permeability, allowing larger proteins to leak into the bloodstream, which may initiate a systemic inflammatory response. Lifestyle choices and dietary habits can affect the permeability of intestinal tight junctions

C. Glutamine serves as an energy source for immune cells

Glutamine is a key energy substrate white blood cells, namely lymphocytes, neutrophils and macrophages, and contributes to their proliferation. For these cells glutamine is a quicker energy source than glucose. Leucocytes cannot synthesize glutamine on their own, and thus are reliant on glutamine provided from other tissues or from dietary intake

There is also some evidence that Glutamine can influence the bacterial composition in the intestines. Intake of Glutamine has been shown to increase increase the amount of bacteroidete (good) to firmicute (harmful) bacteria. In human scientific studies, the presence of Bacteroidete bacteria positively correlates with the presence of Cytotoxic-T cells (CD8+ T cells) which are responsible for destroying virus-infected cells and tumour cells.

Fibersol®-2 is a plant-sourced carbohydrate that classifies as a prebiotic fibre. Prebiotics can induce direct or indirect effect on the gut-associated epithelial and immune cells. They act as a substrate for the growth of gut bacteria. For instance, Fibersol®-2 intake has been associated with an increase in beneficial bifidobacteria in the gut. Beneficial bacteria produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that can modulate the immune response. Prebiotic fibers can directly act on the gut epithelial and immune cells that leads to pro- or anti-inflammatory response.

Vitamin C is a key vitamin for the immune system and exerts a multitude of beneficial effects on cellular functions of both the innate and adaptive immune system. Vitamin C is necessary for the immune system to mount and sustain an adequate response against pathogens, whilst avoiding excessive damage to the host. The fact that leucocytes accumulate vitamin C to concentrations up to 100 times the concentration found in blood underscores the importance of this vitamin in immunity:

They key functions of Vitamin C in immune function can be summarised as follows:

  • Vitamin C helps encourage the production of white blood cells (lymphocytes and phagocytes), which help protect the body against infection.
  • Vitamin C helps these white blood cells function more effectively while protecting them from damage by potentially harmful molecules, such as free radicals.
  • Vitamin C protects the host tissue from excessive damage.
  • Vitamin C is an essential part of the defence system of the skin. It is actively transported to the skin, where it can act as an antioxidant and help strengthen the skin’s barriers.

It is worth noting that Vitamin C intake not only plays a preventative (prophylactic) role but can also treat respiratory and systemic infections by enhancing various immune cell functions. For instance, patients with acute respiratory infections, such as pneumonia, have decreased plasma vitamin C concentrations relative to control subjects. Administration of vitamin C to patients with acute respiratory infections returns their plasma vitamin C levels to normal and ameliorates the severity of the respiratory symptoms. Vitamin C supplementation with doses of 200 mg or more daily is effective in ameliorating the severity and duration of the common cold, and the incidence of the common cold if also exposed to physical stress

Prophylactic prevention of infection requires dietary vitamin C intakes that provide at least adequate, if not saturating plasma levels (i.e., 100–200 mg/day), which optimize cell and tissue levels. In contrast, treatment of established infections requires significantly higher (gram) doses of the vitamin to compensate for the increased metabolic demand.

Ensuring an adequate and regular supply of vitamin C through the diet or via dietary supplementation is required for proper immune function as a deficiency increases the risk of infection. Humans cannot synthesise vitamin C and do not have an effective storage system. One week of inadequate vitamin C intake is sufficient to cause a depletion of vitamin C levels. Epidemiological studies indicate that vitamin C deficiency is still relatively common in Western populations, and vitamin C deficiency is the fourth leading nutrient deficiency in the United States, mainly due to inadequate intake, pollution, smoking.

Selenium is an essential mineral, meaning it must be obtained through your diet. Although it is needed in small (microgram) amounts Selenium plays a major role in important processes in your body, including metabolism, thyroid and immune function.

Selenium status is known to influence the functioning of all components of the immune system and its ability to respond to infections.

Selenium deficiency has been reported to lead to an overall weakening of the immune system, namely via:

  • Reduced production of free radicals which are needed to destroy pathogens.
  • Reduced killing capacity of neutrophils
  • Reduced Cell counts, proliferation and differentiation of T lymphocyte cells
  • Reduced Natural Killer (NK) cell activity
  • Reduced Serum antibody (IgG and IgM) concentrations
  • Reduced antibody responses

Further underscoring the importance of Selenium in immunity is the fact that is a significantly greater risk factor for mortality in HIV patients than CD4+ T cell counts, a key indicator of immune system strength in HIV patients. Unfortunately, Selenium-deficient HIV patients have 20 times greater likelihood of mortality from HIV-related causes than those with adequate Selenium levels.

On the other hand, Selenium intake via food and supplementation has been shown to have a beneficial effect.

Zinc is a vital mineral that your body uses in countless ways.

In fact, zinc is the second-most-abundant trace mineral in your body — after iron— and is present in every cell. Zinc is necessary for the activity of over 300 enzymes that aid in metabolism, digestion, nerve function and many other processes.

In addition, it’s critical for the development and function of immune cells. This mineral is also fundamental to skin health, DNA synthesis and protein production.

What’s more, body growth and development relies on zinc because of its role in cell growth and division. Zinc is an essential micronutrient that’s needed for numerous functions in your body. It’s also important for a strong immune system and helps keep your skin, eyes, and heart healthy

Zinc is also needed for your senses of taste and smell. Because one of the enzymes crucial for proper taste and smell is dependent on this nutrient, a zinc deficiency can reduce your ability to taste or smell.

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is an essential vitamin that your body needs but cannot produce.  Vitamin B12 plays a fundamental role in the body’s production of red blood cells. Without adequate levels of the vitamin in your body, the production of red blood cells can be impacted and can affect the transportation of oxygen to vital organs, causing weakness and fatigue.

Vitamin B12 and folic acid are both vital for immune function. Both are necessary for producing a sufficient number of red blood cells to carry oxygen around the body. If you have a folate deficiency and/or vitamin B12 deficiency, your immune system may start to falter, and your body will struggle to ward off pathogens. Red blood cells are crucial immune cells which are part of your body’s immune response so it’s important to ensure they’re able to form and function correctly.

It’s found naturally in animal products, but also added to certain foods and available as an oral supplement or injection. Vitamin B12 has many roles in your body. It supports the normal function of your nerve cells and is needed for red blood cell formation and DNA synthesis.

For most adults, the recommended daily intake (RDI) is 2.4 mcg, though it’s higher for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Vitamin B12 may benefit your body in impressive ways, such as by boosting your energy, improving your memory and helping prevent heart disease.

Here are 9 health benefits of vitamin B12, all based on science. Vitamin B12 plays a vital role in helping your body produce red blood cells. Low vitamin B12 levels cause a reduction in red blood cell formation and prevent them from developing properly. Healthy red blood cells are small and round, whereas they become larger and typically oval in cases of vitamin B12 deficiency.

Due to this larger and irregular shape, the red blood cells are unable to move from the bone marrow into the bloodstream at an appropriate rate, causing megaloblastic anemia. When you’re anemic, your body doesn’t have enough red blood cells to transport oxygen to your vital organs. This can cause symptoms like fatigue and weakness.

In order for our brain to function adequately, it requires, fuel and lots of it. Whilst the human brain only accounts for 2% of our total body weight, it uses over 20% of our energy resources.

Most of the energy the brain uses, comes from carbohydrates which our bodies break down into glucose or blood sugar.  How the body and brain respond to these sugars varies depending on whether the food has a low or high glycemic index or GI.  GI is a relative ranking of carbohydrates in foods according to how they affect blood glucose levels.

For sustained brain power eating the right kind of carbohydrates is critical.

Immunergy™ has been formulated with 48 grams of carbohydrates, of which two thirds of the carbohydrates come from a slow- digesting carbohydrate called Palatinose™, scientifically known as isomaltulose.  Low GI carbohydrates have been found to improve attention and memory function with studies showing improved memory and mood 3 hours post consumption. (Reference)

Palatinose™ is fully digested and absorbed by the body and provides the same energy as other carbohydrates but over a much longer duration and without causing a spike in blood sugar.  The diagram shows the difference between sugar and Palatinose™.  Palatinose™ provides a constant and steady supply of energy over a longer period without causing any spike in blood sugar.

Studies have found that maintaining adequate levels of glucose throughout the day contributes to optimising cognition, suggesting that nutritional intake should be designed to sustain an adequate level of glucose and to minimise fluctuations between meals.

Tyrosine has been included in the Immunergy™ formulation based on studies that found that Tyrosine supplementation improved working memory performance, multi-tasking, information processing, and convergent thinking.

Branded ingredients often provide scientific and educational support that makes it easy for a consumer to learn more about the science behind the specific ingredient used in the making of Bioteen products.

At Bioteen, we have a commitment to quality throughout our entire manufacturing process. Because we source all our raw materials ourselves, we have total control over what goes into Bioteen products. Our manufacturing is then undertaken by carefully selected contract manufacturers who are third-party certified.

Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) certification: CGMP refers to the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations enforced by the Food and Drug Administration “FDA”. is a system for ensuring that products are consistently produced and controlled according to quality standards. It is designed to minimize the risks involved in any pharmaceutical production that cannot be eliminated through testing the final product. The cGMP acronym originated in the USA, where the US food and Drug Administration wanted to impress upon manufacturers the importance and need for “continuous” improvement to their approach to product quality.

Immunity is your body’s ability to resist toxins, infections and other harmful substances or microorganisms with the use of sensitized white blood cells or specific antibodies. Think of it as a ‘protection system’ – this is how your body defends itself. If it wasn’t for the body’s immune system, various bacteria, viruses and even fungi could attach or infect your body. Thanks to immunity, that is not the case.

The main function of the immune system is to protect you from harmful microorganisms that may cause infection. However, it doesn’t stop at prevention. If you do get sick, it is your immune system that is your body’s first line of defence. It will fight the infection and act to minimize the damage done to your body. A healthy immune system will be able to fight off most infections, whereas a weakened immune system means your illness can last longer, and symptoms may be more severe.

There are 4 types of immunity, 3 natural and an additional one.

  • Innate immunity: the one we are born with. This is our innate immune system. It varies in strength; some people are born with a strong immune system, while some are born with a weak system.
  • Adaptive immunity: also called ‘acquired immunity’. The adaptive Immune system protects us based on its past ‘experience’. This is why, after being infected with something and getting better, we are no longer, at least for some time, susceptible to the same infection.
  • Passive immunity: temporary immunity, also called ‘borrowed Immunity’. This is an immunity which we gain from another person.
  • Immunizations: we can be made immune to something, typically through the administration of a vaccine.

A healthy lifestyle is the best way to support the body’s immune system. It is important to ensure that your teen looks after their immune system on a daily basis. Follow some of the following tips to keep your teens immune system healthy and strong through everyday activities:

  • Eat a balanced diet, including fresh fruit and vegetables. A healthy diet will provide essential vitamins and minerals your teens immune systems need’s to function properly.
  • Get regular exercise. This will help reduce stress, which negatively affects immunity and improves blood circulation, allowing white blood cells to reach any cells affected by disease.
  • Take steps to reduce stress.
  • Get quality sleep. Rest allows your teens body to regenerate and helps the immune system to work adequately.
  • Maintain a healthy body weight.
  • If your teen is not getting enough vitamins and minerals in their diet, add a supplement such as Bioteen Immunergy™ to help support and strengthen their immune system.

Your teen should consume 1 servicing daily (follow the usage guidelines as they appear on the product packaging), ideally in the morning at breakfast time.

Yes, Bioteen Immunergy™ does not contain any animal product and is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Protein needs are based on age, sex, body weight and stage of development, with Teenagers needing between 10 to 30% of their daily calories from protein. Although an individual’s exact needs will vary, the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) provides a good reference for how much of a certain nutrient a healthy individual needs in a day. The RDA for protein is 46 grams for Teenager girls and 52 grams for Teenager boys per day.

The amount of protein Teenagers needs depends on their height, weight, gender and level of activity. More active Teenager Athletes require more protein than the recommended RDA.
