Glutamine is the most prevalent amino acid in the body and has an established role in immune function at gut and systemic (whole body) levels as illustrated in the diagram below:

A. Glutamine assists in maintaining the development and function of intestinal cells.

The intestine utilizes about 30% of total glutamine, indicating that it is a key nutrient for the intestine. Studies in healthy humans have shown that three quarters of ingested glutamine is absorbed into the digestive tract tissues, and most of the absorbed glutamine is metabolized within the intestine. The consistent consumption of low-quality, high carbohydrate processed foods low in fiber, can stress and potentially harm the gut. Considering that the intestines depend on glutamine more than other organs, stress on the gut will require much of the glutamine circulating in the body. Glutamine is recruited to maintain gut integrity, however once glutamine stores are depleted, the intestinal lining is left even more vulnerable to cumulative damage

Glutamine is involved in the replication and development of intestinal stem cells into intestinal cells and goblet cells. The latter are cells that produce mucus which is itself an important immune barrier at the intestinal level.

B. Glutamine helps maintain the structural integrity of intestinal cells for physical defence

Glutamine maintains healthy tight junctions at the intestinal cells. The latter are intercellular connections in the gastrointestinal walls that determine what compounds are absorbed as well as physically blocking the entry of invading pathogens into the bloodstream. Disruption of tight junction functionality results in increased gut permeability, allowing larger proteins to leak into the bloodstream, which may initiate a systemic inflammatory response. C. Glutamine serves as an energy source for immune cells

Glutamine is a key energy substrate white blood cells, namely lymphocytes, neutrophils and macrophages, and contributes to their proliferation. For these cells glutamine is a quicker energy source than glucose. Leucocytes cannot synthesize glutamine on their own, and thus are reliant on glutamine provided from other tissues or from dietary intake

There is also some evidence that Glutamine can influence the bacterial composition in the intestines. Intake of Glutamine has been shown to increase increase the amount of bacteroidete (good) to firmicute (harmful) bacteria. In human scientific studies, the presence of Bacteroidete bacteria positively correlates with the presence of Cytotoxic-T cells (CD8+ T cells) which are responsible for destroying virus-infected cells and tumour cells.

Fibersol®-2 is a plant-sourced carbohydrate that classifies as a prebiotic fibre. Prebiotics can induce direct or indirect effect on the gut-associated epithelial and immune cells. They act as a substrate for the growth of gut bacteria. For instance, Fibersol®-2 intake has been associated with an increase in beneficial bifidobacteria in the gut. For instance, patients with acute respiratory infections, such as pneumonia, have decreased plasma vitamin C concentrations relative to control subjects. Administration of vitamin C to patients with acute respiratory infections returns their plasma vitamin C levels to normal and ameliorates the severity of the respiratory symptoms. Vitamin C supplementation with doses of 200 mg or more daily is effective in ameliorating the severity and duration of the common cold, and the incidence of the common cold if also exposed to physical stress

Prophylactic prevention of infection requires dietary vitamin C intakes that provide at least adequate, if not saturating plasma levels (i.e., 100–200 mg/day), which optimize cell and tissue levels. In contrast, treatment of established infections requires significantly higher (gram) doses of the vitamin to compensate for the increased metabolic demand.

Ensuring an adequate and regular supply of vitamin C through the diet or via dietary supplementation is required for proper immune function as a deficiency increases the risk of infection. Humans cannot synthesise vitamin C and do not have an effective storage system. One week of inadequate vitamin C intake is sufficient to cause a depletion of vitamin C levels. Epidemiological studies indicate that vitamin C deficiency is still relatively common in Western populations, and vitamin C deficiency is the fourth leading nutrient deficiency in the United States, mainly due to inadequate intake, pollution, smoking.

Selenium is an essential mineral, meaning it must be obtained through your diet. Although it is needed in small (microgram) amounts Selenium plays a major role in important processes in your body, including metabolism, thyroid and immune function.

Selenium status is known to influence the functioning of all components of the immune system and its ability to respond to infections.

Selenium deficiency has been reported to lead to an overall weakening of the immune system, namely via:

Protein needs are based on age, sex, body weight and stage of development, with Teenagers needing between 10 to 30% of their daily calories from protein. Although an individual’s exact needs will vary, the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) provides a good reference for how much of a certain nutrient a healthy individual needs in a day. The RDA for protein is 46 grams for Teenager girls and 52 grams for Teenager boys per day.
